Is the Kroger Points Rewards Plus Program Worth It?

Absolutely!

The Kroger Points Rewards Plus Program is completely free to join and integrates seamlessly with your Kroger+ account. By simply shopping for groceries at Kroger or their family of brands, you’ll earn points on your regular purchases with no extra effort or cost.

For a clear picture of the program's value, let’s focus on its best redemption option: the $50 gift card.

  • You earn 1,000 points for every $30 spent on eligible products.
  • To redeem a $50 gift card, you’ll need 16,000 points, meaning you’ll spend $480 on participating products.
  • This works out to a 10.4% return on eligible spending, which is an excellent rate of return for a free rewards program.

If you’re already shopping at Kroger, this program is a no-brainer for maximizing value!

Credit cards for Kroger

There are no credit cards that will earn you points in the Points Rewards Plus program, but you can still easily double dip on rewards by using a rewards credit card to pay for your Kroger purchases. This way you'll earn both points in the Points Rewards Plus program and rewards from the credit card you use to pay for your groceries.

Kroger credit card

Kroger offers one co-branded credit card that earns cash back rewards. It earns a pretty solid 5% back at Kroger when you use the mobile wallet to pay, but it's capped at a low $3K per year which is about $250 per month.

The best benefit of the card is that it offers the ability to save 25¢ per gallon on fuel every time you redeem at least 100 fuel points at Kroger Family of Companies Fuel Centers for the first year. The drawback is that you'll need to spend $6,000 on the card in order to earn that benefit the second year onward.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The Blue Cash Preferred Card is one of the best credit cards in the market for supermarket purchases.

It earns a whopping 6% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases on up to $6,000 per year (then 1%) which is double the cap of the Kroger Mastercard. On top of that, you'll earn at any U.S. supermarket, so you're not tied to strickly earning rewards spending at Kroger.

It also earns bonus cash back on several other categories including U.S. streaming services, transit, and U.S. gas stations.

The card has a $95 annual fee, but if you spend $6,000 per year (which is $500 per month) on U.S. groceries, you'll still come out ahead with $265 in cash back on groceries alone when the fee is subtracted.

Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Card earns an unlimited 3% cash back at grocery stores. This is the perfect card for anyone that spends way beyond $500 per month at Kroger and other grocery stores. Along with having no annual fee, the card also has no foreign transaction fee which means you can use it to earn cash back worldwide without penalty!
